PRESENTATION OF THE EXCHANGE

Description of activities, objectives reached, and outputs

As part of the jointly conducted project between Mr. Storm, an experienced violin maker, and Ms. Goldbach, a young violin maker with a background in musicology, an intensive exchange of knowledge and experience in violin making was made possible. The goal was to combine historical techniques with modern approaches while simultaneously developing innovative methods in marketing and customer engagement.

Project Progress and Results

At the beginning of the collaboration, the focus was on understanding each other’s working methods and techniques. Both engaged in an in-depth exchange about historical violin-making practices, particularly the techniques of the old masters and their influence on modern construction methods. Ms. Goldbach gained valuable insights into the traditionally handcrafted aspects of Scandinavian violin making, while Mr. Storm benefited from her extensive knowledge in musicology and training in traditional German violin making.

Acoustic Optimization and Construction of a New Instrument

The core of the project was the construction of a violin with a special focus on sound and acoustic adjustments. The goal was to optimize the violin’s tonal quality through targeted modifications to the internal structure and construction. Both violin makers regularly exchanged technical details, leading to valuable new methods. A particularly exciting aspect was the dialogue between Mr. Storm’s expertise in tonal requirements and Ms. Goldbach’s understanding of the expectations of younger musicians. This combination resulted in innovative solutions that incorporated both tradition and modern sound concepts.

To test the developed method, the same acoustic modifications were applied to two additional machine-made instruments. These tests confirmed the success of the concept and highlighted the effectiveness of the new construction approach.

Development of New Design Concepts: Violin Model and Maritime Scroll

Beyond acoustic optimization, another key focus was the development of a unique violin model for Ms. Goldbach. After an in-depth analysis of traditional proportions, a model was designed that respects historical standards while incorporating personal accents. This model now serves as the foundation for her future work, allowing her to establish a distinctive signature in violin making.

In addition, a novel violin scroll design was created, integrating traditional elements with modern aesthetics. Influenced by Mr. Storm’s artistic background, Ms. Goldbach designed a maritime-style scroll and implemented it using her contemporary craftsmanship techniques. This creative process not only enhanced technical execution but also encouraged a deeper engagement with the aesthetic and functional aspects of instrument design.

Restoration of a Hardanger Fiddle

An additional side project involved the restoration of a Hardanger fiddle, which required extensive repairs. Using Ms. Goldbach’s experience from previous restoration internships, a detailed restoration plan was developed and implemented. This allowed the historic instrument to be preserved and made playable for future musical use.

Expanding Professional Expertise: Marketing and Customer Acquisition

Alongside the craftsmanship, the business side of violin making was also explored. Mr. Storm began to familiarize himself with modern marketing strategies, while Ms. Goldbach introduced him to the fundamentals of digital branding. Together, they developed a social media strategy tailored to Mr. Storm’s specific violin-making business.

Additionally, valuable insights were gained in customer acquisition. Key ideas were discussed and assessed for feasibility with Mr. Storm’s extensive experience. This exchange enabled both to expand their professional knowledge and refine future business strategies.

Conclusion

The project proved to be highly beneficial for both participants. The exchange was characterized by mutual appreciation and openness, leading to a lasting collaboration. Both violin makers not only deepened their expertise but also gained new perspectives on violin making, marketing, and customer engagement.

By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern methods, an innovative approach was developed that reimagines both acoustic and aesthetic aspects. The success of this project was made possible in its entirety through the support of the EYE Program. Mr. Storm and Ms. Goldbach sincerely thank all involved for this valuable experience.

QUOTES

I truly recommend such an exchange to everyone. It is essential for every craft – even one as small as violin making – to network and share ideas. I encourage everyone to be open and brave enough to share their own results with others because only in this way can true progress be achieved.
